October Facts

The first frost usually happens in October.

Columbus Day is celebrated in many schools and various organizations. It comes on the second Mondayin October. Columbus Day honors Christopher Columbus' arrival in America on Oct. 12, 1492.

Halloween is celebrated on the last night of October, with children dressing up in masks and costumes, going door to door, asking for a treat.

The Chicago Fire began, and burned for about 30 hours, October 8, 1871.

The USA flag was formally raised over Alaska, October 18, 1867.

The Statue of Liberty was dedicated, October 28, 1886.

 

Pumpkin Facts

Around 90 to 95% of the processed pumpkins in the United States are grown in Illinois.

The top pumpkin production states are Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania and California.

  • Pumpkin seeds can be roasted as a snack.

  • Pumpkins contain potassium and Vitamin A.

  • Pumpkins are used for feed for animals.

  • Pumpkin flowers are edible.

  • Pumpkins are used to make soups, pies and breads.

  • Pumpkins are 90 percent water.

  • Pumpkins are fruit.
